Is it a wet belt?

Peugeot, Citroën and Vauxhall share one engine family, known as PureTech. The shared engine is the reason one package covers all three, but not every 1.2 from these makes is a wet belt.

Peugeot

Peugeot 1.2 PureTech

Parts and tool-maker lists show the 1.2 PureTech in the Peugeot 208, 2008, 308, 3008, 5008, Partner and Rifter. Peugeot UK describes a customer support programme for the previous generation PureTech 1.0 and 1.2 engines.

Citroën

Citroën 1.2 PureTech

The same lists show it in the Citroën C3, C3 Aircross, C4 Cactus, C4, C5 Aircross and Berlingo. Citroën UK runs the same customer support programme as Peugeot.

Vauxhall

Vauxhall 1.2 PureTech

For Vauxhall, the lists show the Corsa F, Crossland, Grandland and Combo. Older Vauxhall 1.2 engines in the Corsa D and E and the Adam are Ecotec chain-driven engines and are not wet belts.

Some 1.2 engines are chain driven, and sources report that the newest 1.2 engines from 2023 are too, so a recent car is not automatically a wet belt. Badge and registration year alone cannot settle it. Engine code is what parts suppliers use, so send your registration and Seb will confirm before quoting.

Warning signs

What to look out for on a 1.2 PureTech.

Oil pressure warning

Peugeot, Citroën and Vauxhall describe the symptom of the belt problem as an oil pressure issue. We have not read their handbook wording, so check yours. As a general precaution, do not keep driving with an oil pressure warning showing. This is urgent, not a routine booking.

Oil level dropping or oil that looks wrong

Oil is what lubricates a wet belt, and Stellantis ties its support to servicing with the correct oil grade, quality and quantity.

Rough running or loss of power

Parts suppliers report these as symptoms of a degraded belt. They are secondary reports, and many other faults cause the same thing.

Debris or contamination found when the belt is checked

Gates and Dayco say that if contamination is found, the oil pump and vacuum pump strainers and related oil ways should be checked.

These signs can have other causes and do not prove a belt fault. A wet belt does not always give a clear warning before it fails, so do not rely on symptoms alone. If you notice any of them, send Seb your registration and what you have seen.

Replacement timing

Scheduled replacement is separate from symptoms

Peugeot UK says belt replacement intervals are in the vehicle's service booklet. Figures quoted elsewhere vary, for example 6 years with 100,000 km, 60,000 miles or 64,000 miles, and none came from a Peugeot, Citroën or Vauxhall document we could read, so this page does not quote one. Check your booklet, or ask Seb to confirm for your exact engine.

  • No symptoms does not mean the belt is safe.
  • A belt can be due for replacement even when the car drives normally.
  • Gates, a belt maker, recommends checking belt width every 12 months or 16,000 miles, whichever comes first. That is Gates's advice, not Stellantis's.
  • Gates and Dayco say the belt can be looked at through the oil filler cap, but a visual check does not replace the scheduled replacement.

What it involves

What Seb replaces on this engine

Seb's package covers the timing belt kit, crankshaft gear bolt and six crankshaft pulley bolts, engine oil, oil filter, oil strainer removal and clean, and the listed seals, gaskets and sealant. The full list is above. Seb has not supplied the oil quantity, so he confirms it when he quotes.

General technical notes

  • Replacement needs engine-specific locking tools.
  • Belt kits from component makers include the belt, tensioners, idlers, seals, gaskets and bolts.
  • If contamination is found, strainers and oil ways are checked. Seb's package includes the oil strainer removal and clean.

Sources: Gates technical guide and febi procedure notes. Seb will agree the time for the job when he quotes.

Stellantis support

PureTech customer support programme

Stellantis runs a UK customer support programme for previous-generation PureTech 1.0 and 1.2 engines, for oil pressure problems caused by premature timing belt degradation and for excess oil consumption. It states cover of 100% of parts and labour for up to 10 years or 112,000 miles, subject to conditions, from March 2024. Conditions include build dates and the engine's service history. Read the official terms for Peugeot, Citroën or Vauxhall.

The scheme says diagnosis and repair must be carried out by the Stellantis network. Roses is an independent business, so work by Seb is not a scheme repair. Roses cannot say whether your car qualifies. If you think it may, contact your brand before you arrange any repair.

Keep your service records

The scheme says servicing must have followed the manufacturer's plan, with the correct oil grade, quality and quantity, and proof. It allows servicing by any automotive professional. Keep your records either way.

I spent two years working at Citroën and Peugeot, on engine and gearbox rebuilds and replacements and electrical fault diagnosis. Before going out on my own I also worked on BMW, Škoda and Ford vehicles, and most recently with the RAC's mobile mechanics division.

Questions customers ask

How much does 1.2 wet belt replacement cost?

Seb's package is £650 for selected Peugeot, Citroën and Vauxhall 1.2 engines. Your registration confirms whether the package applies, and Seb gives you your final quote before booking.

Is labour included, and is VAT added?

Yes, labour is included in the package price, and no VAT is added to Seb's prices.

What if more work is needed?

Any additional work is quoted and agreed before we proceed.

Does my 1.2 Peugeot, Citroën or Vauxhall have a wet belt?

It depends on the engine code, not the badge. The 1.2 PureTech has one, while older Vauxhall 1.2 Ecotec engines are chain driven and the newest 1.2 engines are reported to be chain driven too. Send your registration and Seb will check.

Does the package depend on the year of my car?

Seb has not set a year limit on this package. That does not mean every 1.2 engine has a wet belt: it depends on the engine, so Seb checks your registration before he quotes.

Is the 1.2 in my Vauxhall Corsa a wet belt?

The Corsa F uses the PureTech engine family, which has a wet belt. Older Corsa D and E 1.2 engines are Ecotec chain-driven engines. Send your registration to be sure.

Are Peugeot, Citroën and Vauxhall 1.2 engines the same?

The PureTech engine is shared across the three makes, which is why one package covers them. Which models and engine versions apply is checked from your registration.

How often should the belt be replaced?

Peugeot UK says the interval is in the service booklet, and figures elsewhere vary, so this page does not give one. Gates recommends checking belt width every 12 months or 16,000 miles. A belt can be due even when the car drives normally.

Does Stellantis cover wet belt problems?

Stellantis has a customer support programme for previous-generation PureTech engines, with conditions and build dates, and it applies to Stellantis network repairs. Read the official terms and contact your brand before arranging any repair. Work by Roses is not a scheme repair.

Can I use an independent garage for servicing?

The scheme allows servicing by any automotive professional if the manufacturer's plan is followed and you can prove it. Diagnosis and repair under the scheme go through the Stellantis network.

Does the price include a full service?

Seb has not listed a full service price for this package. The package does include engine oil, an oil filter and the oil strainer removal and clean. Ask Seb if you want a service at the same time.

Can Seb do it at my home or workplace?

Yes, in Woking, Guildford and Farnborough. Tell Seb where the car will be parked and he will confirm whether the job can be done there.

Is there a warranty?

Yes. All services carry a 12-month parts and labour warranty.
