Warning signs

Signs you may need a wet belt replacement.

Low oil pressure warning light

An amber or red oil can symbol on the dashboard. If it comes on, stop driving when it is safe and get advice before using the car again.

Debris in the oil

Fine dark sediment on the sump plug magnet, in the drained oil or in the oil filter at a service is worth having checked on these engines.

Oil level dropping or oil that looks contaminated

Oil is what lubricates and cools a wet belt, so low or contaminated oil is worth checking promptly.

Engine turns over but will not start

A belt that has lost teeth or snapped can stop an engine starting. Other faults can cause the same symptom.

These signs can have other causes and do not prove a belt fault. A wet belt does not always give a clear warning before it fails, so do not rely on symptoms alone. If you notice any of them, send Seb your registration and what you have seen.

Replacement timing

Scheduled replacement is separate from symptoms

Manufacturers set replacement intervals for each engine, in miles and years, and some have revised them since the engines were launched. Your handbook or service schedule is the place to check what applies to your car.

  • No symptoms does not mean the belt is safe.
  • A belt can be due for replacement even when the car drives normally.
  • Send your registration and Seb can confirm your engine and the package that fits it.

What is a wet belt

A timing belt that runs in engine oil

A wet belt is a timing belt that runs inside the engine, in contact with engine oil, instead of in a dry cover outside it. Like any timing belt, it keeps the crankshaft and camshaft in time so the valves open and close when they should.

Because the belt works in oil, the condition of that oil matters. Oil that is contaminated, diluted or low, or oil that does not meet the manufacturer's specification, can shorten the life of the belt.

Not every engine has a wet belt. The engine, generation and build date decide it, so a model name alone is not enough. Send your registration and Seb will confirm your engine before quoting.

Looking after a wet belt engine

  • Use the exact oil grade and specification your manufacturer requires.
  • Check your oil level between services.
  • Avoid oil or fuel additives unless your manufacturer specifies them.
  • Follow your manufacturer's belt replacement schedule.

Questions customers ask

How much does wet belt replacement cost?

Seb's packages are £1,050 for the Ford 1.0 EcoBoost, £1,000 for the Ford 2.0 EcoBlue, £1,200 for Ford Rangers fitted with a wet belt and £650 for the Peugeot, Citroën and Vauxhall 1.2. The package that applies depends on your engine, so send your registration and postcode on WhatsApp and Seb will confirm the package and your final quote.

What is included in the price?

Parts and labour are included in every package price, and each package lists its parts, grouped by type, in the prices and inclusions section above. Optional extras are priced separately where Seb has listed them. If you are unsure whether something is covered, ask Seb before you book.

Is VAT added to the price?

No. No VAT is added to Seb's prices.

What if more work is needed?

Any additional work is quoted and agreed before we proceed.

How do I know if my car has a wet belt?

Not every engine has one, and a model name alone does not tell you. The engine, generation and build date decide it. Send your registration and Seb will check your engine.

Does a full service cost extra?

A full service upgrade is listed as an extra of £135 on the Ford 1.0 EcoBoost package and £150 on the Ford 2.0 EcoBlue and Ford Ranger packages. Seb has not listed one for the Peugeot, Citroën and Vauxhall 1.2 package, so ask him if you would like a service at the same time.

Is the water pump included?

On the Ford 1.0 EcoBoost package the water pump is part of the inclusions. On the Ford 2.0 EcoBlue and Ford Ranger packages, water pump replacement is an optional extra of £100.

My Ford has a 1.5 EcoBoost. Is this the right page?

Seb's information is that the 1.5 EcoBoost does not have a wet belt, so these packages do not apply to it. Timing belt replacement is covered under cambelt replacement. Send your registration and Seb will confirm what your engine needs.

Where does Seb do the work?

At your home or workplace in Woking, Guildford and Farnborough. Tell Seb where the car will be parked when you message him and he will confirm whether the job can be done at that location.

Is there a warranty?

Yes. All services carry a 12-month parts and labour warranty.
