Many Ford 1.0 EcoBoost petrol engines in the Fiesta, Focus, EcoSport, B-Max and C-Max use a timing belt that runs in engine oil. Some also have a separate belt that drives the oil pump. This package covers both belts.

Later engines can differ
Garage and parts-supplier sources report that later engines, including the mild hybrids, drive the camshafts by chain instead. Ford has not published a single dividing date that we could confirm, so Seb checks your engine before quoting.

What to look out for on a Ford 1.0 EcoBoost.
Oil pressure warning light
If the oil pressure warning light comes on while driving or stays on, Ford's owner manual wording is to stop safely as soon as possible, switch the engine off and check the oil level, and not to continue if the light stays on. Check your own handbook, as wording can differ by model. This is urgent, not a routine booking.
Oil level dropping or oil that looks contaminated
Oil is what lubricates a wet belt, so low or contaminated oil is worth checking promptly.
Debris in the oil
Fine dark sediment on the sump plug, in the drained oil or in the oil filter at a service is worth having checked on a belt-in-oil engine.
Engine turns over but will not start
A belt that has lost teeth or snapped can stop an engine starting. Other faults can cause the same symptom.
These signs can have other causes and do not prove a belt fault. A wet belt does not always give a clear warning before it fails, so do not rely on symptoms alone. If you notice any of them, send Seb your registration and what you have seen. Component makers say the belt cannot be inspected from outside the engine, which is why a clear car is not proof of a healthy belt.

Ford tells owners to ask an authorised dealer for the maintenance and replacement schedule for their own vehicle, and the figures quoted by garages and websites vary between engine versions and over time. We could not confirm Ford's current interval for each 1.0 EcoBoost variant, so this page does not quote one. Your service booklet, or a Ford dealer using your VIN, is the place to check.

Oil and recalls
Ford's manual for the 1.0 EcoBoost in a Transit or Tourneo specifies SAE 5W-20 oil to Ford specification WSS-M2C948-B. Always use what your own handbook specifies. Ford's US recall 23S64 covers certain US-market automatic Focus, Fiesta and EcoSport models. We found no UK recall, and a Ford dealer can check your VIN for open campaigns.
